Samudera Pasai Sultanate

1267 CE – 1521 CE (approx.) · capital Pasai

The first securely dated Muslim kingdom of Southeast Asia, a pepper port in northern Sumatra visited by Marco Polo and Ibn Battuta.

Origins

Samudera Pasai arose on the north coast of Sumatra, near modern Lhokseumawe, in the late 13th century. Its first Muslim ruler, Sultan Malik al-Salih, is known from his tombstone dated 1297, and the Hikayat Raja Pasai tells of his conversion. Marco Polo stopped at Samara in 1292. It later absorbed neighbouring Peureulak.

Rule and society

Pasai exported pepper, silk and camphor and issued gold coins, among the earliest in the region. Ibn Battuta visited in 1345 and praised Sultan al-Malik al-Zahir as a learned Shafi'i ruler who debated with scholars. Pasai became a centre from which Islam and Malay letters spread across the archipelago.

Decline and legacy

Pasai was raided by Majapahit around 1350 and later overshadowed by Malacca. The Portuguese seized it in 1521, and the Aceh Sultanate conquered it in 1524. Its royal tombstones, some of them carved in Gujarat, remain important early evidence of Islam in Southeast Asia.
