Severians

600 CE – 884 CE (approx.)

An East Slavic tribe on the Desna, Seym and Sula rivers, whose lands became Chernigov and kept the regional name Siveria.

Origins

The Severians settled the wooded steppe east of the Dnieper along the Desna, Seym and Sula in the 8th century. Archaeologists connect them with the Romny culture of hill forts. Like the Polans and Vyatichi they paid tribute to the Khazars.

Rule and society

They lived in fortified settlements on river bluffs and farmed the black earth, trading with the Khazar lands and the Arab world, from which large numbers of silver coins reached them. Chernigov, Novgorod-Seversky and Lyubech grew up in their territory. They faced the steppe directly and bore the brunt of nomad raids.

Decline and legacy

In 884 Oleg forced them to pay tribute to Kiev instead of the Khazars. Their land became part of Kievan Rus' and later the Principality of Chernigov and the Principality of Novgorod-Seversky. The name Siveria survived for the region, and the Severians are last mentioned as a people in the 11th century.
