Teozacoalco
Origins
Teozacoalco, Chiyo Cahnu in Mixtec, was a royal seat in the western Mixteca Alta by about 1000. Its rulers were closely related by marriage to the lords of Tilantongo, the senior Mixtec house, and its first dynasty appears in the codices of this period.
Rule and society
Like other Mixtec kingdoms, it was a small domain ruled by a hereditary lord and lady from a palace, drawing tribute from dependent villages. The Map of Teozacoalco, painted for the Spanish Relaciones Geográficas, lists its rulers in a long genealogy and helped scholars link the codices to real places and dates.
Decline and legacy
Teozacoalco fell under Aztec tribute in the late 15th century and came under Spanish rule after 1522, its native lords continuing as caciques under colonial authority.
