Tharad State

1700 CE – 1948 CE (approx.) · capital Tharad

A small Vaghela Rajput state in the Banas Kantha country of northern Gujarat.

Origins

Tharad was held by a Vaghela Rajput family in the dry country north of the Banas river. The register dates it to around 1700, and the town had an older history as a medieval centre.

Rule and society

The ruler governed a territory of millet fields and grazing land, under the Palanpur and later the Banas Kantha Agency in the British period. Little else is recorded in standard references.

Decline and legacy

Tharad merged into Bombay Province in 1948 and became part of Gujarat in 1960, in Banaskantha district.

Few sources survive for this state; details are uncertain.
