Tippu Tip's State
Origins
Hamed bin Muhammad al-Murjebi, called Tippu Tip, was a Swahili-Arab trader from Zanzibar who led caravans deep into the interior from the 1860s. In the 1870s he established himself in Manyema on the upper Lualaba, making Kasongo the centre of a domain of trading posts, allied chiefs and armed followers.
Rule and society
The state was a commercial network rather than a kingdom: armed bands collected ivory and captives, plantations of rice and other crops fed the settlements, and goods moved east to Zanzibar. Tippu Tip helped Henry Morton Stanley down the Lualaba in 1876, and in 1887 the Congo Free State appointed him governor of the Stanley Falls district.
Decline and legacy
Tippu Tip retired to Zanzibar in 1890. War broke out between the Free State and the Swahili-Arab traders in 1892, Kasongo fell in 1893, and by 1894 the state had been destroyed, its lands absorbed into the Congo Free State.
