Vijaynagar State

1577 CE – 1948 CE (approx.) · capital Vijaynagar

A small Rajput state in the forested hills of northern Gujarat, also known as Pol, on the borderlands with Rajasthan.

Origins

The state took its earlier name from Pol, a hill town among the Aravalli spurs of the Mahi Kantha region. Its Rajput rulers held this frontier zone from the later 16th century, though the details of its founding are poorly recorded.

Rule and society

The ruler, styled Rao, governed a sparsely settled tract of hills and forest with a large Bhil population. In the British period the state was grouped in the Mahi Kantha Agency. The area is known for its ruined temples at Polo, deep in the forest near the old capital.

Decline and legacy

In 1948 the state was merged into Bombay Province, and its territory became part of Sabarkantha district when Gujarat was formed in 1960. The Polo forest is now a protected area.

Few sources survive for this state; details are uncertain.
