Viye Kingdom

1750 CE – 1890 CE (approx.) · capital Kuito

An Ovimbundu kingdom of the Bie plateau whose traders carried goods across Central Africa, and whose defeat in 1890 opened the interior to Portugal.

Origins

Viye (Bie) was founded by the 18th century, tradition says by a hunter named Viye, on the eastern edge of the Angolan central highlands. Like the Bailundo Kingdom, it grew as a raiding and trading state supplying captives to Benguela.

Rule and society

Viye's kings ruled from a fortified capital through titled officials. Ovimbundu caravans from Viye travelled to the Lunda lands, the upper Zambezi and Katanga, trading in slaves, ivory, beeswax and later rubber. The Portuguese trader Antonio da Silva Porto lived at Belmonte in Viye for decades and led trading expeditions into the interior.

Decline and legacy

In 1890 King Ndunduma expelled a Portuguese expedition, and Silva Porto died after the confrontation. Portugal sent a punitive force that defeated Ndunduma and exiled him, bringing Viye into Portuguese Angola. The town of Kuito grew on its lands.
