António da Silva Porto

1817–1890 · 19th century

António Francisco Ferreira da Silva Porto was a Portuguese trader and explorer who settled at Belmonte in the Viye (Bié) kingdom of central Angola in the 1840s and led caravans deep into the interior to trade ivory, wax and rubber. In 1890, after King Ndunduma turned against a Portuguese expedition, he took his own life by setting off a keg of gunpowder. The town of Kuito was long named Silva Porto after him.
