António de Andrade

1580–1634 · 17th century

António de Andrade was a Portuguese Jesuit missionary and explorer who in 1624 crossed the Himalaya from India and became one of the first Europeans to enter Tibet. Welcomed by the king of Guge, he founded a mission and built a church at Tsaparang in 1626. The mission angered the Buddhist clergy and ended after the fall of Guge to Ladakh in the 1630s; Andrade himself died in Goa in 1634.
