1954 Guatemalan coup d'état
The 1954 Guatemalan coup d'état overthrew the elected president Jacobo Árbenz, whose land reform had expropriated unused land of the United Fruit Company. Organised by the CIA under the code name Operation PBSuccess, it combined an invasion from Honduras by a small force under Carlos Castillo Armas with propaganda and air raids; the army refused to fight, and Árbenz resigned on 27 June 1954. Decades of military rule followed.
