Aare
The Aare is the longest river lying entirely within Switzerland, flowing nearly 300 km from the Bernese Alps through Lake Brienz and Lake Thun, past Bern, Solothurn and Aarau, to join the Rhine at Koblenz on the German border. Duke Berthold V of Zähringen founded Bern on a loop of the river in 1191, and the ancestral castle of the Habsburgs stands above its valley near Brugg.
