Aegidius

?–464/465 · 5th century

Aegidius was a Roman general who commanded in northern Gaul from about 457 until his death in 464 or 465. Appointed by Emperor Majorian, he refused to accept Majorian's murder in 461 and ruled the region around Soissons independently of the Italian court, defeating the Visigoths near Orléans in 463. His son Syagrius inherited his power in what historians call the Domain of Soissons.
