Aesop

6th century BCE · 6th century BCE

Aesop was a Greek storyteller to whom a large collection of fables, the Aesopica, is attributed. According to Herodotus he was a slave of a Samian named Iadmon and lived in the sixth century BCE; later traditions made him a native of Phrygia or Thrace and told of his death at Delphi. Whether he really existed is uncertain, but his name became attached to the European fable tradition.
