Afar Triangle
The Afar Triangle is a lowland region in the Horn of Africa where Ethiopia, Eritrea and Djibouti meet. It lies at the junction of three tectonic rifts and contains some of the lowest and hottest places on Earth, including the Danakil Depression. Its fossil sites, including Hadar, where the hominin skeleton known as Lucy was found in 1974, make it central to the study of human origins.
