Aussa

Also known as Awsa

Aussa is an oasis region in the lower valley of the Awash river in the Afar lowlands of north-eastern Ethiopia, watered by the river before it ends in a chain of lakes. In 1577 the imams of Adal moved their seat there from Harar, founding the Imamate of Aussa. From about 1734 it was the centre of the Afar Sultanate of Aussa, ruled by the Mudaito dynasty from Asaita.
