1543 · 16th century · Also known as Wayna Daga · Part of the Ethiopian–Adal War

The Battle of Wayna Daga was fought on 21 February 1543 in the Ethiopian highlands, where Emperor Galawdewos of the Ethiopian Empire, aided by Portuguese musketeers, defeated and killed Ahmad ibn Ibrahim al-Ghazi, known as Ahmad Gran. The Portuguese contingent had arrived under Cristóvão da Gama. The battle ended the Adalite conquest of Ethiopia and began the decline of the Adal Sultanate as a military power.
