Awash River

The Awash River is a river in Ethiopia that flows from the central highlands towards the Afar lowlands. In the fourteenth century Emperor Amda Seyon launched expansion southward across the Awash, incorporating regions such as Dawaro and Bale and several Muslim sultanates. The river marked an important frontier in the foundation of the Ethiopian Empire.
