Agokoli

fl. 17th century · 17th century

Agokoli is remembered in Ewe tradition as a tyrannical king of Notsie, in modern Togo. According to the story, his cruelty drove the Ewe to escape secretly from the walled town, probably in the 17th century, and to disperse and found new settlements, including the Anlo state. The escape is celebrated in the annual Hogbetsotso festival.
