Al Jazeera is a television network based in Doha, launched in November 1996 with funding from the emir of Qatar, Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani. As the first major Arabic news channel independent of other Arab governments it transformed the region's media, broadcasting interviews and debates rarely seen before, and won a wide audience during the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq. It added an English-language channel in 2006.
