House of Thani
The House of Thani is the ruling family of Qatar, descended from Thani bin Muhammad, whose son Muhammad bin Thani emerged as the leading sheikh of the Qatar peninsula in the mid-nineteenth century. Under Jassim bin Muhammad it consolidated its authority over the tribes, and after British protection ended in 1971 it continued to rule independent Qatar, with family members holding the main offices of state.
