Khalifa bin Hamad Al Thani
Khalifa bin Hamad Al Thani was Emir of Qatar from 1972 to 1995. Already the leading figure in government at independence in 1971, he deposed his cousin Ahmad bin Ali in February 1972. He used oil revenues to build state institutions, housing and welfare services and nationalised the oil industry. In 1995 his son Hamad bin Khalifa removed him in a bloodless coup while he was abroad.
