Al Hoceima

Also known as Alhucemas, Villa Sanjurjo

Al Hoceima is a port city on the Mediterranean coast of northern Morocco, in the Rif. It lies near the site of Nekor, capital of an early Islamic emirate. The modern town was founded by Spain as Villa Sanjurjo after the Alhucemas landing of 1925 during the Rif War and returned to Morocco in 1956. In 2016–2017 it was the centre of the Hirak Rif protest movement.
