Al-Mukhtara

870s–883 · 9th century

Al-Mukhtara, "the Chosen", was the fortified capital built by Ali ibn Muhammad, leader of the Zanj Rebellion, among the canals and marshes near Basra in southern Iraq. From it the rebels raided across lower Iraq and Khuzestan for more than a decade. Abbasid forces under the regent al-Muwaffaq besieged it from a purpose-built city on the opposite bank and stormed it in 883, ending the revolt.
