Khuzestan

Also known as Khuzistan

Khuzestan, historically Khuzistan, is a province of south-western Iran at the head of the Persian Gulf, watered by the Karun River. It was the heartland of ancient Elam, with Susa as its chief city, and later a rich province of the Achaemenid, Sasanian and Islamic empires, famous for sugar cane and textiles. Today it is the centre of Iran's oil industry and has a large Arab population.
