Wasit
Wasit was a city in central Iraq on the Tigris, founded around 702 by the Umayyad governor al-Hajjaj ibn Yusuf as the garrison and administrative capital of Iraq, midway between Kufa and Basra. It remained an important provincial centre under the Abbasids and later dynasties, but declined after the Tigris shifted its course and was eventually abandoned. Its ruins lie in present-day Wasit Governorate.
