661–714 · 7th century

Al-Hajjaj ibn Yusuf was an Umayyad general and governor, the most powerful servant of the caliphs Abd al-Malik and al-Walid I. He besieged Mecca in 692, ending the caliphate of Ibn al-Zubayr, and then governed Iraq and the east from 694 until his death in 714, crushing the revolt of Ibn al-Ash'ath. He sponsored the conquests of Sind and Transoxiana and reforms of coinage and administration.
