Karkheh River

Also known as Choaspes

The Karkheh is a river of western Iran, about 900 kilometres long, which rises in the Zagros Mountains and flows south through Lorestan and Khuzestan, passing near the ruins of Susa, to the Hawizeh Marshes on the Iraqi border. Identified with the ancient Choaspes, it watered the heartland of Elam. The Karkheh Dam, completed in 2001, lies on its course.
