al-Mukhtar al-Thaqafi

c. 622–687 · 7th century · Also known as Mukhtar al-Thaqafi

Al-Mukhtar al-Thaqafi was an Arab revolutionary who seized Kufa in 685 in the name of Muhammad ibn al-Hanafiyya, a son of Ali, during the Second Fitna. He took revenge on the killers of Husayn and won support from non-Arab converts, the mawali. His army defeated the Umayyads on the Khazir River in 686, but Mus'ab ibn al-Zubayr besieged him in Kufa, where he was killed in 687.
