Albert IV, Duke of Bavaria

1447–1508 · 15th century · Also known as Albert the Wise

Albert IV, called the Wise, was Duke of Bavaria-Munich from 1465. After the War of the Landshut Succession of 1503–1505 he reunited the divided Wittelsbach duchies into a single Duchy of Bavaria, and in 1506 he decreed primogeniture so that the land would not be partitioned again. Munich became the permanent capital, and the Frauenkirche was completed early in his reign.
