Albert Speer

1905–1981 · 20th century

Albert Speer was a German architect and Nazi politician who became Hitler's favourite architect and, from 1942, Minister of Armaments and War Production. By rationalising industry and using forced labour he raised arms output to a peak in 1944. Tried at Nuremberg, he admitted general responsibility while denying knowledge of the Holocaust, served twenty years in Spandau prison and wrote best-selling memoirs.
