Alexander III of Scotland

1241–1286 · 13th century

Alexander III was King of Scots from 1249 to 1286. After the Battle of Largs in 1263 he gained the Western Isles and the Isle of Man from Norway by the Treaty of Perth of 1266, and his reign of peace with England and growing trade was later remembered as a golden age. His death in a fall from his horse near Kinghorn left only his infant granddaughter, the Maid of Norway, as heir.
