Alexander Obrenović

1876–1903 · 19th century · Also known as Alexander I of Serbia

Alexander Obrenović was king of Serbia from 1889 to 1903. His authoritarian rule, suspension of the constitution and unpopular marriage to Draga Mašin alienated the army. In June 1903 officers murdered him and his queen in the palace in Belgrade, ending the Obrenović dynasty and bringing Peter I Karađorđević to the throne.
