Alhflæd

fl. 650s · 7th century · Also known as Alhflaed

Alhflæd was a daughter of King Oswiu of Northumbria who married Peada, ruler of the Middle Angles, around 653, on condition that he accept baptism. The marriage brought Northumbrian missionaries into Mercian lands. Bede reports that Peada was murdered in 656, betrayed, it was said, by his wife.
