The Fens
The Fens are a low-lying region of former marshland around the Wash in eastern England, in Cambridgeshire, Lincolnshire and Norfolk. In the Middle Ages they were a land of islands and waterways with great abbeys such as Ely, Peterborough and Crowland. Large-scale drainage in the 17th century, led by the Dutch engineer Cornelius Vermuyden, turned them into rich farmland.
