Feodor I of Russia

1557–1598 · 16th century · Also known as Fyodor I Ivanovich

Feodor I was tsar of Russia from 1584 to 1598, the son of Ivan IV and the last of the Rurikid line to rule Muscovy. Pious and withdrawn, he left government to his brother-in-law Boris Godunov, under whose regency the Moscow Patriarchate was established in 1589 and Russia recovered towns on the Gulf of Finland from Sweden. His death without an heir brought Godunov to the throne.
