Ali ibn Mahdi

d. 1159 · 12th century

Ali ibn Mahdi was a preacher from the Tihama, the coastal plain of Yemen, who denounced the luxury of the Najahid rulers of Zabid and gathered a following among the tribes from the 1130s. After years of raids he captured Zabid in 1159, ending the Najahid dynasty, and died the same year. His sons ruled as the Mahdid dynasty until the Ayyubid conquest of 1174.
