Alp Tegin
Alp Tegin was a Turkic slave commander of the Samanid dynasty who rose to command the army of Khurasan. After a failed attempt to influence the Samanid succession, he withdrew to Ghazni in eastern Afghanistan in 962, took the town from its local ruler and held it as a nearly independent lordship until his death in 963, laying the foundations of the Ghaznavid state.
