Álvaro I of Kongo

d. 1587 · 16th century

Álvaro I was king of Kongo from 1568 to 1587. Early in his reign invaders known as the Jaga overran the kingdom and drove him from his capital, São Salvador, to an island in the Congo River, and he was restored in the early 1570s with the help of Portuguese troops sent from São Tomé. He promoted Christianity, and his reign saw the Portuguese establish Luanda to the south in 1576.
