Jaga

The Jaga were invaders who overran the Kingdom of Kongo in 1568, sacking São Salvador and forcing King Álvaro I to flee, until a Portuguese expedition helped to expel them in the early 1570s. Their origin is debated: historians have identified them with peoples from the east of the kingdom or with internal rebels. Europeans later applied the name loosely to the Imbangala warrior bands of Angola.
