Mpanzu a Kitima
Mpanzu a Kitima was a Kongolese prince who contested the succession to King João I of Kongo in 1509 against his half-brother Afonso. Supported by opponents of Christianity, he was defeated in battle at the capital, Mbanza Kongo, a victory that Afonso attributed to the miraculous appearance of Saint James. Mpanzu was killed or executed after the battle.
