Person
Arechis I of Benevento
Arechis I was Duke of Benevento from 591 to 641, appointed after the death of Zotto, the first duke. During his fifty-year rule he extended the Lombard duchy over most of southern Italy, taking Capua and sacking Crotone, though he could not capture Naples. He laid the foundations of a duchy largely independent of the Lombard kings at Pavia.
