Ariarathes I of Cappadocia

d. 322 BCE · 4th century BCE

Ariarathes I was the Persian satrap of Cappadocia who kept control of the region after Alexander the Great conquered the Achaemenid Empire. In 322 BCE the regent Perdiccas invaded Cappadocia to install Eumenes, defeated Ariarathes and had him executed. His adopted son Ariarathes II later regained the land, and his line became the Ariarathid dynasty.
