Aristocracy

c. 750 BCE – c. 1918 CE · 8th century BCE

Aristocracy, rule by a privileged few who claimed to be the best, governed much of the world from the early Greek city-states to the First World War, usually as a hereditary landed nobility. Its defenders saw it as a school of experience and a check on kings and crowds, its critics as privilege and exclusion.
