fl. 480 BCE · 5th century BCE

Artemisia I was the queen of Halicarnassus in Caria in the early 5th century BCE, ruling as a vassal of the Achaemenid Empire after the death of her husband. Herodotus, himself from Halicarnassus, describes how she commanded five ships in Xerxes' invasion of Greece and fought at the Battle of Salamis in 480 BCE, having advised the king against giving battle.
