Battle of Salamis

480 BCE · 5th century BCE · Part of the Greco-Persian Wars

The Battle of Salamis was a naval battle fought in 480 BCE in the straits between the island of Salamis and the coast of Attica, during the second Persian invasion of Greece. The allied Greek fleet, led by Athens under Themistocles, defeated the larger fleet of Xerxes I, who then withdrew with much of his army to Asia. The victory prepared the way for the Greek success at Plataea the next year.
