Cimon

c. 510–450 BCE · 5th century BCE

Cimon was an Athenian statesman and general, son of Miltiades, who led the Delian League in the decades after the Persian Wars. Around 466 BCE he destroyed a Persian fleet and army at the Eurymedon river, and in 463 BCE he reduced rebellious Thasos. A supporter of friendship with Sparta, he was ostracised in 461 BCE but later recalled, and he died on campaign in Cyprus about 450 BCE.
