Miltiades

c. 550–489 BCE · 6th century BCE · Also known as Miltiades the Younger

Miltiades was an Athenian general who ruled the Thracian Chersonese before fleeing to Athens from the Persians in 493 BCE. As one of the ten generals he persuaded the Athenians to fight and led them to victory at Marathon in 490 BCE. A failed attack on Paros the next year led to his trial and a heavy fine, and he died of a wound soon after; his son was Cimon.
