Battle of Sakarya
The Battle of Sakarya was fought from 23 August to 13 September 1921 along the Sakarya River west of Ankara, during the Greco-Turkish War. The Turkish nationalist army under Mustafa Kemal halted the Greek advance on Ankara after three weeks of fighting, forcing the Greeks to withdraw. It was the turning point of the war, and the Grand National Assembly awarded Mustafa Kemal the title Gazi.
