Mausolus

d. 353 BCE · 4th century BCE

Mausolus was the Hecatomnid ruler of Caria from 377 to 353 BCE, formally a Persian satrap but in practice an independent dynast. He moved his capital to Halicarnassus, which he enlarged and fortified, and extended his power over Lycia and the nearby Greek islands. His monumental tomb, completed by his wife Artemisia II, gave the word mausoleum and was a Wonder of the World.
