Artsakh (historical province)
Artsakh was a province of ancient Armenia, corresponding broadly to the highlands of Nagorno-Karabakh. After the partition of Armenia between Rome and Persia around 387 it passed with neighbouring Utik to Caucasian Albania, but its population remained closely tied to Armenian culture and the Armenian Church. In the Middle Ages it was ruled by Armenian princely houses such as that of Khachen.
